Too Human - First Impressions
I played about an hour or so of Too Human last night and another 20 minutes this morning. My play time was curtailed due to birthday dinner shennanigans for
rubicontiger. I've also played the demo a couple times, so this First Impression is more of a third.
The gameplay is fun and fast paced, let's get that out of the way right up front. Once you have the controls down, my only real complaint is the camera controls, which are next to nonexistant. The problem new players will have is getting the controls down. The first level does pop-up some "helpful" information, but it's not doing anyone any favors in the "Tutorial" sense of the word. A nice combat tutorial would make this game a much quicker draw for new players.
The Achievements come fast and furious at the beginning of the game, especialy if you get into the zone during the secret battle halls. Things probably slow down pretty quickly, though, since some of the achievements have some pretty hefty requirements.
Loot drops are crazy. I pre-ordered, so I have the pre-order gear for all new characters. This gear is pretty sweet looking, and the stat boosts help a lot in the first area. I've already replaced much of it with gear you can get in the first area (succesful completion of the secret areas give you blueprints for some pretty sick armor). Even if you don't have the pre-order gear, though, the drop rate for upgraded goodies is pretty high, so you won't be worrying much. Again, however, the lack of a tutorial as to what things are in-game means some people will be confused for some time on utilizing their best stuff.
The storyline seems pretty good so far. My only issue with it is that it seems pretty clear pretty quickly where certain things are going to go awry with the storyline, which may mean they're being too obvious. If you enjoy mythology, especially Norse mythology, you will definitely get a kick out of the story of this game. It's set in a post-apocalyptic Earth that appears to be reliving, or perhaps the source of, said mythology.
All in all, I'd say this game should be bought if you enjoy action/adventure/action RPG style games. It's got a very Diablo feel to it.
