When reading your friends page, clicking on the "friends" link will not take you anywhere new.

And it still won't take you anywhere new when, in a fit of confusion, you click it three more times to make sure it isn't broken.

This is why in my custom theme, for whatever page I'm currently on, that option is not available to click and is "greyed out" :)

It prevents these problems.

Yeah, but I'm lazy, and cut-n-pasting my header is so much easier when I don't have to care about that. ;-)

And friendsfriends uses the same "page" as friends, so the option is still useful for me.
