A certain legendary, very nice but inept tech once came up to me for help because the store was having problems with T2 and he couldn't connect to (or ping, so I'll give him that) the store's NT server.

I asked him "can you ping anything else at the store"?

At which point he just shuffled back to his desk.

Eh, I once caused a minor panic with Singapore when their POS wouldn't boot up. Two hours later Pete discovered the floppy disk in the drive. :-p

With people like that - people who should know better - I never asked them to ping. I'd ask, "So, what kind of ping results did you get?" Showing that I assumed that they had already done this often made them feel stupid for not having done it already.

I'm evil, though. Your results may vary.

Well, of all the cases this retard escalated, that was the most intelligent example I could find. The rest were pretty clear "the hardware is toast, replace it you fucknut" cases.
