I normally don't do this, but then, I've been known to do it for this one specific item on occaision, so I will do it again.

Murder for Beltene by Sandra Brewer.

I am, normally, not a fan of mysteries. Well, classic msyteries, I should say. I did enjoy the couple Agatha Christie novels I read for book reports, but they weren't my favorite. I cannot sit through an entire Sherlock Holmes book. However, my first "favorite series" of books were Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. They were mysteries, but they had a modern flavor to them.

This book has something of that modern flavor, with a dash of a fantasy history thrown in for good measure.

This is also the only book I have ever read two times in a row upon my first reading of it.

The protaganist is a fairly infamous author of vampire novels. She, of course, has her share of slightly off-center fans who read a little too much into what she writes and have been known to cause a ruckus in her quiet home town. However, it now appears that one of them has begun killing people and arranging it to look like vampire attacks.

Needless to say, this is not a good thing.

The story centers around a small, fictional town in northern Michigan where the Beltene clan has lived since moving from Wales in centuries past. Of course, the fact that many of those who actually moved from Wales are still alive and kicking is something that is not general knowledge to the world at large. Herein lies the dilemma. A crazed murderer is leaving gifts for the current head of the family, meanwhile, they must get the case solved without the world finding out the secret of their family.

Of course, having just hired a new sherrif with no clue as to the family history simply complicates matters further. Especially since it becomes obvious to the heroine that he was hired as a potential suitor for her. No, she is not amused.

The book is sometimes funny, sometimes creepy, and an incredibly fast read. You can read the first two chapters of the book online at beltene.com. There was supposed to be a sequel out last year, but it sadly has not appeared. Here's to hoping that it may someday arrive.
