That's a pretty good rebuttal. I have to agree with you on just about every point you made towards the Final Fantasy series, especially 1 and 2. 3 doesn't have any of the characters' genders defined. They start out as "Onion Kids" and look male. It follows the Final Fantasy V character class change concept, and some of the class changes definitely look female. There is a female NPC character who is necessary to progress in the game, though (she even follows your party around on the map).
Another game with a strong female lead role is Valkyrie Profile on the Playstation. The whole game has plenty of strong female characters, in fact. I hope someone mentioned it in a rebuttal to the original editorial.
