One would think that I, of all people, would not be surprised to learn that someone wasn't exactly who they said they were online.

Of course, the particulars of each case vary.

I simply played female characters in MMORPGs and had far too much fun explaining that, yes, indeed, the person on the other end of the keyboard really was male.

Nope. Completely and utterly nope.

This is someone who had an LJ account who, well, appears to have possibly made up his life, relationships, and tragedies.

I reserve judgement until I hear it from the horses mouth, but seeing as how he's no longer on LJ...

ACK. This happened to an LJ friend of Tatoodevil... someone revealed the faker when she noticed the person was using webcam pictures of her as their user icons. Totally creepy. The pretender (who IIRC had been having a snail-mail correspondance with Tatoodevil) disappeared shortly thereafter...
