Whoever does the makeup on Angel doesn't try to make anyone look younger. Take a look at Alexis on the show. Then look at him in "real life". He actually looks older on the show than in his "real life" photos.
And James is in his 40's, for crying out loud! :-p
Yeah, I've noticed the Alexis aging, though then again I think that's to define his darkened nature since the show's beginnings. On second thought that could be the issue with James as well, purposefully making him look older to show what he's going through in hell. Or it could just be the lighting, I'm not sure. It's not an age thing overall though. In last season's Buffy he looked like has has over all of the previous seasons.
Eh, I don't think so. I think it's just different makeup artists. Season 7 he also looked "older" but that was more of what he was going through with his soul and being tormented by The First.
He doesn't have the heavy eyeliner anymore. That's the biggest thing. You notice the lines around his eyes more that way.
Ah, yeah, the eyeliner is a big difference. I hadn't even really thought about it though subconsciously I noticed it. I'm not sure though. His cheeks look like they've got wierd random dimples in them now. All in all, I'm not a big fan of the changes, but I guess we can expect that to change as the makeup artists become more familiar with him. I remember when Spike first showed up, he looked like a clown with how much makeup he had on. ;)
Well, some of it may be the radical weight changes he has had.
He was pretty solid (not big by any stretch) when he first showed up. He got REALLY fucking skinny in season 6, and then he let himself fill back out again.
He got real skinny cuz he wanted to show the vampire as a metaphor for starvation. Then he put on weight cuz he got sick of them always having him be shirtless. :-p
