Well, we all have to go shopping—come rain or come shine.
This probably isn't the place to say this (I'm brand-new to LiveJournal as of today—forgive me!) but your profile says you're majoring in vocal music education? Is that a seperate major at your school? I am wondering because a dear friend wants to do this in Florida and we can't find her the exact sort of program she wants . . . she needs a DMA in Voice with additional emphasis on education. Anyway, thought maybe you would know something about this!
Eastern Michigan University has two different Music Education degrees. There is one for Instrumental and one for Vocal. Not all schools have these options. Some just have "music education", and a lot of people who get a specific one wind up teaching both anyway. My high school choir director had a degree in Instrumental Music Education (her primary instrument was Clarinet) but she wound up teaching Choir for over 20 years.
The Vocal program at EMU requires either Voice or Piano for your primary instrument.
My friend has a BA in voice and an MA in musicology and is now looking at doctoral programs that combine performance-based work (as in a traditional DMA program) with intensive training in pedagogy. Surprisingly, a lot of doctoral programs don't stress pedagogy for people in voice despite the fact they will be teaching (probably) at the college level anyway.
Programs in Florida seem pretty basic in music (except FSU) anyway and since she's from Clawson, I am planning to send her back your way to East or U Mich or somewhere if I can.
For a doctorate I know there is a school in Oklahoma that does a vocal education style doctorate. I believe University of Michigan has one as well. Eastern does not yet have a doctorate of music program, sadly.
