If you're reading your "friends" page and click "back" (as in to go further in the past) it appends ?skip=NNN where NNN is the number of items to skip back.

Click "Edit Custom Friends Groups"

Click "New". Name the group "Default View" (with caps and spaces, although the caps may be optional).

Choose the people on the left, click the >> button to send them to the right.

You can make other groups with other names, too. Only you can read the filters when logged in unless you mark them with the "Public" button.

Click "Save" to complete!

If you look at my journal layout, on the right hand side I have my link list. "Communities", "Humor", "Cute Things", "LiveJournal Goodies", "Syndicated Feeds", and "Friend's Friends" are my main filters that I use.
