Smallville Season Finale

I posted this over at Television Without Pity, and figured I'd post it here.
It's spoilerific, so it gets a cut.
As far as Smallville season finales go, this wasn't horrible. None of them have been flat out horrible, actually. It's probably low in the bunch if only because it was far too predictable. The only "okay didn't see THAT coming" moment I had was SoFine unleashing his killer virus... into the computer. And then the world falling apart because, ya know, we lost power. And if everyone loses power, there's always mass chaos.
Hi. I live in southeast Michigan. In part of it that was without power in that huge power outage we had two summers ago. Trust me. Nobody flipped out.
Chloe didn't have that much to do this episode. Other than the huge Chlark smooch (which seems to have involved a little tongue action), she didn't really do anything. She was support girl, freakout girl, and "OH SHIT I'M BEING ATTACKED BY AN ANGRY MOB" girl.
Lex finally let all of his jealousy hang out at Clark. He's figured out Clark's secret, and it pisses him off that Clark gets to get away with lying while he's called on it. Of course, lying about being an extra-terrestrial compared to lying about developing a superweapon that will destroy all life on the sea floor (since the Aquasuck episode played immediately followed and all) are in completely different ball games.
Unfortunately, the Lex tirade seemed so... unexpected. And not in that good plot twist way, but in that bad "we have to explain this guys real mental damage and why he's evil" kind of way. We already knew he envied Clark. He always has said he envied Clark. But saying that he was only friends with Clark because he wanted what Clark had? Sorry, they made Lex a far more interesting character than that. This is a character who had more depth than any character on the show. Unless this is explained away as him being under the influence of Kryptonian programming, it's going to annoy me to no end.
Zod (herein referred to as Zex) was cool, but I desperately wanted a KNEEL BEFORE ZOD moment. And he's clearly using Lana. He knows that Clark loves her, and he knows that the Phantom Zone won't hold Clark forever. There is no emotion on his face when she walks up to him, no compassion. He kissed her not like a lover, but like someone admiring a posession, because that is what she is to him. Zex in leather. I need a moment to compose myself now...
Lana. Ya know, I am not a Lana hater. I like Lana. Lana makes sense. She's consistent, and based on her life experiences, she usually doesn't make me want to hurt her. Except tonight. I kept thinking "maybe he'll pitch her off the roof. That'll teach her." Sadly, it was not to be. I also hoped Clark would just freakin' tell her already. Ah well. I was glad to see the long anticipated return of Lana-Fu. She got self-defense training for a reason. As much as some people bitch about it and how cheesy it is, it's something that actually helped me like her character.
Lionel made perfect sense. For a moment I thought they actually killed him, when Lex punted him into the windshield. He's always been devoted to Lex, but he's also the most pragmatic character on the show. He had a visible emotional reaction to learning Lex was the vessel of Zod. He was clearly distraught at this. However, he knows there are things that are more important than Lex's survival. In fact, he knows that Lex is the most dangerous person in the world right now because he raised him to be that person. If the old Lionel had gained Kryptonian powers, he would have been just as dangerous. However, ever since Transference, Lionel has been a changed man. There is one minor little issue, though, that makes me go "hmmmm".
Lois and Martha stuck in a jet. A Luthorcorp jet. A Luthorcorp jet that Lionel set them up with. With SoFine driving. I don't think Lionel planned it, I think SoFine intercepted the change of itenerary and opted to use them as more collateral against Clark. He's done a very good job of setting things up so that all of the people that are important to Clark are in grave danger, so if he does return to interfere he'll have to decide who he can save.
Of course, Chloe already said that Clark can't save everybody. And she's right, Clark Kent can't.
Superman can. I don't mean that in the literal sense. I mean that Superman would be able to find a way to save all of the people in his life that are in mortal or semi-mortal peril.
I think when we next see Clark, he's going to be flying under his own power.
I'm already predicting the premier. And based on all the hemming and hawing that the Powers that Wannabe have tossed about, the premier is going to involve Clark flying. I'm predicting an Airplane rescue (iconic as all hell in comic book land), as well as a last minute rescue of Chloe (perhaps with flyage) and a beat down of Zex in front of Lana. Preferably with her apologizing for not trusting him and saying how he was right all along and him saying that it's nice that she's all apologetic, but he's with Chloe now.
Although, getting back to Chloe, as cool as the kiss was, I'm still waiting for her to realize she's over him and for the writers to realize that Chloe should not be defined by her relationship with Clark. It's a problem with the Lois Lane character in the comics. Without Clark Kent, Lois really doesn't have a reason to exist. We don't need two characters like that, ya know?
So, yeah. Decent episode. Not the best finale (Commencement wins that award in my book). Definitely better than Aquabro. Which explains why they aired it immediately following. So that, ya know, you'd think "man that was a great finale especially compared to that other episode they showed".
