I started my current job (sans a couple internal promotions) on August 27th, 2001. Two weeks later, a picture floated around the department (which I no longer have) that was taken at the site of the 9/11 attacks. In a building that was still standing (although heavily damaged), you could still clearly see the signs for the store we had in the World Trade Center. The store had more or less survived. None of our employees were injured in the attacks, and someone who I had worked with in my position just prior to this one had actually been crossing the street to his first day of work at that store when it all started. A few weeks later, once businesses were allowed in to retriever anything that may have survived, the servers from that store made their way here to our office, where they sat in our lab for a few weeks. Disturbing, yet amusing at the same time.

The media circus today regarding the event is completely tacky in my opinion. Shrub's retarded pronouncement of Patriot Day the year following the incident is even worse. I'm not really sure what kind of stupid it takes to think that rebroadcasting the entirety of the news programs in real time on the anniversary of the event, especially something that is still as raw to so many people as this, is a good idea.

But, do you wanna know the really sucky thing? We had to swear off morning sex after that incident. I mean, come on, we have nookie one time before climbing out of bed and what happens? Planes fly into buildings and kill thousands!

Far be it for me to not find something to laugh about in tragedy.

One of these days I'm going to have go check out the store they built to replace it. Well, okay, one of the stores (they built like two!), particularly the Times Square one. The pictures they sent around the home office for it are freakin' awesome!

We still have the disk and diskpack from store 142. The diskpack is empty (and dusty), but the disk itself was put into another casing and has been up and running as dbs142 for years. (It's currently been 312 days since it's last reboot.)

Sometimes it gets used to test something or another, but mostly it's just there because Dave wanted it to be. You can still see this simple entry in the powerchute logs:

100100 09/11/01 09:56:06 *** PowerChute PLUS Stopped ***

and this entry in the Sybase logs:

00:01/09/11 09:55:03.03 server SQL Server shutdown by request.
00:01/09/11 09:55:03.07 kernel ueshutdown: exiting
00:01/09/11 09:55:03.29 kernel os_detach_region: shmdt(0x8d9000): Invalid argument.
00:01/09/11 09:55:03.38 kernel os_detach_region: shmdt(0x502000): Invalid argument.

...all which basically means that in that mayhem, someone was able to get in and shut the system down properly that morning (though something got inturrupted- probably OHM).

Yeah Pete went in to shut everything down if I recall correctly.

There's a 5 year limit on no morning nookie that potentially causes terrorist actions. I suggest getting up early tomorrow and celebrating the end of the ban.

Heh. See, the problem now is waking up early enough to be able to and waking [livejournal.com profile] satyr_mi up early enough. :-p That just don't happen. :-p

If you avoid morning nookie, then the terrorists win!

I totally agree with the tackyness. This country seems obsessed with memorials. Dont get me wrong, I know people need to mourn, but the media starts turning days like this into festivals. Like valentine's day have little to do with true romantic love, etc, it's just another day at the circus. Sigh.

Everything's a big production. If it can't be encapsulated into a 90 minute extravaganza with the latest pop music superstars and/or solemn pronouncements from on high then it's not worth talking about. 9_9
