I knew this over a decade ago...
And yet, the media continues to act shocked when artificial sweeteners are linked to obesity. At least this one spells out one of the things I learned way way way back in the day. Specifically, that your body says, "Oh! You just ate something that tasted sweet! INCOMING CARBOHYDRATES! GET READY!" Then no carbs actually make it into your system and the body goes, "HOLY SHIT!! WE'RE CRITICALLY LOW ON ENERGY!!! MOAR FOOD!!!" and you proceed to eat the couch.
That said, I still like diet soda.
That said, I still like diet soda.
Bad Scirend...
From the text:
In comparison to rats given yogurt sweetened with glucose, those that ate yogurt sweetened with saccharin went on to consume more calories and put on more weight and body fat.
It wasn't the sweentener that caused the weight gain it was the extra calories.
You can't model a self-aware human who knows they are on a diet trying to lose weight with a un-aware rodent who doesn't know what a diet is.
People have will power and other reasons that complicate the picture some of which make losing weight easier some of which make it harder. What did the rat have a busy day at work and hit Mc'D's or call in for take out?
Re: Bad Scirend...
Well, that'd be one way to help humans with their diets. Destroy the temptation of fast food by filling McDonald's with rats. Shut them all down for code violations and kiss convenient and fattening fast food goodbye. :)
